The Lok Sabha will hold a high-stakes debate on Operation Sindoor—India’s military response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack—on Monday, July 28, during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. The Rajya Sabha is scheduled to hold a similar discussion on Tuesday.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the Business Advisory Committee approved the special debate, following sustained pressure from the Opposition, including the Congress, which demanded the issue be prioritized in the session’s agenda.

Key Highlights of the Operation Sindoor Debate:

  • 16-Hour Discussion: Both Houses will hold 16-hour-long discussions—Monday in Lok Sabha, Tuesday in Rajya Sabha.

  • Debate Lead: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to open the debate, with key interventions anticipated from Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and BJP MPs including Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey.

  • Trump’s Mediation Claims: The Opposition is likely to raise US President Donald Trump’s claims of having mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, a claim the government has not officially acknowledged.

  • Prime Minister’s Participation: While Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation is unconfirmed, reports suggest he may use the platform to strongly counter Opposition criticism.

  • Opposition Speakers: Key leaders from the INDIA bloc are expected to speak, including Rahul Gandhi, Gaurav Gogoi, Manish Tewari (Congress), Akhilesh Yadav (SP), Supriya Sule (NCP), and Abhishek Banerjee (TMC).

  • TDP Participation: MPs Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi of the Telugu Desam Party are expected to speak, with 30 minutes allotted to the party.

  • INDIA Bloc Strategy Meet: Opposition floor leaders will meet at 10 a.m. Monday to finalize their strategy for the debate and the rest of the session.

  • Rijiju’s Appeal: Ahead of the debate, Rijiju urged the Opposition not to stall proceedings. “It’s a loss for the country if Parliament doesn’t function,” he said, referring to the disruptions during the first week.

  • NDA Delegations’ Input: Several NDA MPs who were part of international delegations following Operation Sindoor are also expected to contribute to the discussion.

The debate marks a significant political moment, with the government set to highlight its national security stance and the Opposition seeking accountability and clarity on India’s diplomatic and military posture.
