Mohammad Kaif Urges Patience Amid Controversy Over Mustafizur Rahman’s IPL 2026 Signing

Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif has called for a “waiting game” regarding the controversy surrounding Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman and his participation in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

Rahman, a left-arm fast bowler, was acquired by three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the mini-auction for ₹9.20 crore. However, strained India-Bangladesh relations following recent attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh have sparked debate over his signing.

The controversy comes after Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu worker in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district, was beaten to death over alleged blasphemy charges. Days later, another Hindu youth was lynched in Rajbari’s Pangsha sub-district. These incidents have raised questions about the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh and led some political figures in India to criticise KKR and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan for not considering national sentiment during the auction.

It is important to note that Khan was not present at the Abu Dhabi mini-auction; the winning bid for Rahman was placed by KKR’s head coach Abhishek Nayar and CEO Venky Mysore. The franchise emerged victorious in a bidding war with five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to secure Rahman.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the ILT20 in Dubai, Kaif said he had limited knowledge of the matter and would refrain from making sweeping statements. “I don’t have much knowledge of the issue. I’ve been here in Dubai for the past 2–3 weeks. What will be the decision? Everything comes under the BCCI, the decision is in their hands,” he told the Times of India.

Kaif added: “I will not sit here and share an opinion because it is a sensitive issue. You should play the waiting game because what is happening, what will be the movement, we may write — but in reality, there is no movement there (on the ground).”

Don’t Jump the Gun

Kaif also urged stakeholders and fans not to jump the gun, emphasising faith in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). “So I think we should not jump the gun. We should just wait and watch. Whatever the decision will be, BCCI are sitting there, they run big leagues, they know what to do and how to do it,” he said.

In the IPL 2025 season, Rahman had played as a replacement for Delhi Capitals, stepping in for Jake Fraser-McGurk. Over his career, he has also represented Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the premier T20 league.
