A mass stabbing incident at a Walmart store in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday, July 26, 2025, resulted in injuries to eleven people, including a store employee. Authorities have confirmed the attack was random in nature and that the suspect has been taken into custody.

Suspect and Apprehension

The assailant, identified as 42-year-old Bradford James Gille from Afton, Michigan, used a folding knife with a 3.5-inch blade to carry out the attack. According to officials, Gille was quickly subdued in the parking lot by bystanders—one reportedly armed—before law enforcement arrived. A sheriff’s deputy took him into custody within minutes of the initial report. The swift civilian and police response is credited with preventing additional injuries.

Victim Status

The victims ranged in age from 29 to 84 years old, with injuries varying in severity:

  • Two victims are reported to be in serious condition.

  • Six victims remain in critical condition.

  • One individual has already been discharged from the hospital.
All eleven were treated at Munson Medical Center, and medical staff have expressed optimism about their recovery.

Legal Proceedings

Authorities intend to charge Gille with one count of terrorism and eleven counts of assault with intent to murder. Officials stated that the terrorism charge reflects the broad fear and disruption caused in the community, despite no apparent ideological motive at this time. Investigators are also working with federal agencies, including the FBI, to fully understand the suspect’s background and any prior history of violence.

Gille has a documented history of assault-related offenses and past substance abuse violations. He is currently being held in Grand Traverse County Jail, with formal arraignment expected in the coming days.

Community and Official Response

Michigan’s leadership, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer, expressed deep concern and solidarity with the victims and their families. State officials commended the courageous actions of bystanders and first responders, who helped de-escalate a potentially deadlier situation.

Walmart representatives also issued a statement condemning the violence, reaffirming their cooperation with law enforcement, and committing support services for affected employees and customers.

The stabbing at the Traverse City Walmart has deeply shaken the local community, but the quick and decisive actions of ordinary citizens and law enforcement helped prevent a greater tragedy. With charges pending and all victims receiving care, the focus now turns to recovery, justice, and renewed discussions around public safety preparedness.
