Messi Arrives in India: Shah Rukh Khan, Kolkata and a ‘GOAT’ Welcome Await Football Icon
The moment fans across India have been waiting for has finally arrived. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan had promised he would be in Kolkata—and he has kept his word—as Lionel Messi begins his first visit to India in 14 years. Two global icons are set to share the spotlight as the Argentine legend kicks off his multi-day ‘GOAT Tour’, celebrating a career that culminated in World Cup glory.
Messi’s India tour begins in Kolkata, widely regarded as the unofficial capital of football in the country. His arrival marks the start of a journey that will take him across multiple cities, bringing fans face-to-face with one of the greatest players the sport has ever known.
The celebrations in Kolkata include a grand tribute: the unveiling of a towering 70-foot statue of Messi holding the FIFA World Cup trophy—an enduring symbol of his legacy.
Beyond the statue, Messi’s packed itinerary features meet-and-greet sessions, football interactions, and high-profile encounters. He is set to oversee a seven-a-side match at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium and meet some of Bengal’s most prominent figures, including former India captain Sourav Ganguly and Kolkata’s adopted son, Shah Rukh Khan—an interaction widely expected to set social media ablaze.
Messi’s Day 1 Schedule
Messi arrived at Kolkata airport around 2:30 am and proceeded to his hotel. Despite the early hours, the day promises little rest for the footballing icon.
He will begin with a closed-door sponsor interaction before virtually inaugurating the 70-foot statue. Shortly before 11 am, Messi will head to Salt Lake Stadium, where he will meet Shah Rukh Khan, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and Sourav Ganguly.
The stadium programme also includes a “Masterclass with Messi” session, during which he will interact with and inspire young Indian footballers. A showcase match between Mohun Bagan All-Stars and Diamond Harbour All-Stars is also part of the day’s events.
Later in the evening, Messi will fly to Hyderabad for the second leg of his opening day in India. The city will host the ‘GOAT Concert’ at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, rounding off a landmark first day of his long-awaited return to the country.
