‘Make a deal or we’ll finish the job’: Trump issues fresh warning to Iran amid Khamenei funeral
US President Donald Trump on Monday renewed his warning to Iran, saying Tehran must either reach a deal with Washington or face the consequences.
“We’re going to win one way or the other. We’re going to either make a deal or we’re going to finish the job—and it won’t be tough to finish the job,” Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that his preference remained a negotiated agreement.
Referring to Iran’s nuclear programme, Trump said the US would ensure Tehran does not develop nuclear weapons.
“There’ll be no nuclear weapon. We’re going to be getting the, as I call it, dust; the enriched material—nuclear dust,” he said, adding that oil prices had remained stable despite the conflict and that the US had secured key concessions.
Trump also reiterated that he was not seeking regime change in Iran, according to Reuters.
Trump keeps up pressure despite ceasefire
Trump’s latest remarks come despite the ceasefire between the US and Iran following last month’s interim peace agreement that ended weeks of fighting.
Earlier, as Iran held days-long funeral ceremonies for slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Trump said the gathering of Iran’s top leadership could have been targeted militarily but claimed the US refrained because diplomatic efforts were still underway.
“They are all there. One shot [and we can take them all out], but we are not going to do that because then we would have nobody to negotiate with,” Trump told Axios.
He also expressed surprise at the large turnout for Khamenei’s funeral, suggesting many Iranians had opposed the late leader.
“Maybe it’s fake tears,” Trump was quoted as saying.
Iran hits back
Iran responded sharply to Trump’s remarks, accusing the US of lacking “civilisation, history and honour.”
In a post on X, the Iranian embassy in Armenia said the United States—despite recently celebrating the 250th anniversary of its independence—could not comprehend the scale of public mourning for Khamenei.
“People can be killed, but ideals cannot. You killed Ayatollah Khamenei, but in reality, you broke a perfume bottle whose scent spread everywhere. You don’t understand these things because you have neither civilisation, nor history, nor honour,” the embassy said, referring to the crowds that attended the late leader’s funeral.
