Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes off Oregon coast

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the coast of the US state of Oregon on Thursday night, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), GFZ said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, though authorities said they were monitoring the situation, according to local media.

No tsunami warnings were issued by the National Tsunami Warning Center, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The offshore area near the Oregon–California border lies within a seismically active zone where earthquakes are common due to tectonic plate interactions along the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

Most earthquakes in the region occur offshore and are not felt on land, though stronger events can be widely felt along the Pacific Northwest coast.
