Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Strikes Indonesia’s Sulawesi Region; No Immediate Reports of Damage

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi region on Thursday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The quake occurred at a depth of 30 kilometers (19 miles) and was recorded at 13:07 UTC (around 18:37 IST). So far, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

This tremor follows a 5.5 magnitude earthquake that jolted the Seram region of Indonesia just a day earlier, on Wednesday. That quake was centered at a depth of 15 km, approximately 244 km northeast of Ambon and 155 km from Amahai, and similarly did not result in any major damage or reported injuries.

Earlier in July, Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands were hit by a 6.7 magnitude quake at a depth of 98 km. Prior to that, in May, a 4.6 magnitude earthquake had struck Northern Sumatra.

Indonesia, located on the seismically active Pacific “Ring of Fire”, frequently experiences earthquakes due to the complex tectonic activity in the region.
