MAGA Firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene to Resign from House After Rift With Trump

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia — once a staunch ally of President Donald Trump who has since broken with him — announced Friday that she will resign from Congress in January.

In a ten-minute video posted online, Greene said she had “never fit in” and had “always been despised in Washington,” describing her decision as the result of mounting political and personal frustrations.

Her resignation follows a highly public rift with Trump in recent months after she criticized him over his handling of files related to Jeffrey Epstein, as well as his positions on foreign policy and health care. Trump responded by calling her a “traitor” and “wacky,” and vowed to back a primary challenger against her in 2026. Greene said she will leave office on Jan. 5, 2026.

The White House did not immediately comment.

Once one of Trump’s most loyal defenders, Greene emphasized in her video that she had supported him consistently except on a handful of issues, and said she believed it was “unfair and wrong” for Trump to attack her for voting her conscience.

“Loyalty should be a two-way street,” she said, adding that her duty was to represent her district, not adhere to any single figure.

First elected in 2020 as part of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement, Greene quickly became one of Congress’s most polarizing members. Her promotion of QAnon conspiracy theories and appearances alongside white supremacists alienated GOP leaders — though Trump embraced her, calling her “a real WINNER!”

Over time, she grew into an influential legislator on the right, forging a close alliance with then–House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy, who later became speaker. Her standing shifted after McCarthy’s ouster in 2023.

Greene joins a growing list of lawmakers from both parties opting not to continue in Congress amid a tumultuous legislative session. Her departure is expected to reverberate throughout Republican ranks and prompt speculation about her next political moves.
