Loud emergency alert on phones? Govt’s nationwide disaster warning system test triggered Saturday buzz

9

If your phone suddenly emitted a loud warning tone on Saturday morning followed by an “Extremely severe alert” message, there’s no cause for panic.

The alert was part of the Government of India’s nationwide trial of its new cell broadcast-based disaster warning system, designed to instantly notify citizens during emergencies.

The message displayed on many devices read: “India launches Cell Broadcast using indigenous technology for instant disaster alerting service for its citizens. Alert citizens, safe nation. No action is required by the public upon receipt of this message. This is a test message.”

Part of nationwide disaster alert trials

The government had earlier informed citizens that large-scale testing of the mobile-based disaster alert system would be conducted across the country and advised people to ignore the notifications.

According to official communication, the tests are being carried out as part of the pan-India rollout of the Cell Broadcast (CB) facility to evaluate the system’s performance and reliability before its formal launch.

People may receive these test alerts multiple times in English, Hindi and regional languages during the trial phase.

How the system works

The alert framework is based on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), an internationally recognised standard recommended by the International Telecommunication Union.

It enables authorities to send urgent warnings directly to mobile phones in affected areas without relying on SMS networks.

The project is being jointly implemented by the Department of Telecommunications and the National Disaster Management Authority.

Similar test conducted earlier

This is not the first such trial.

A similar nationwide test was conducted in February, when both Android and iPhone users reported receiving loud emergency notifications labelled “Test Alert”.

That message clarified it was a system test conducted by the NDMA in coordination with the DoT to validate the cell broadcast solution for future emergency communication.

So if your phone startled you this morning, it was simply part of the government’s effort to strengthen India’s disaster preparedness system.
