Organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics on Wednesday unveiled the full competition schedule, featuring a bold showcase for the women’s 100 meters on the opening day and a jam-packed “Super Saturday” of finals in the final weekend.
The Games, running from July 14 to July 30, will bring together 11,200 athletes competing in 51 sports across 49 venues—making LA28 the largest Olympics ever staged. For the first time, every team sport will have an equal or greater number of women’s teams than men’s, with women comprising 50.5% of all competitors.
Women’s 100m to Open the Games
Day one, July 15, will feature the highest number of women’s finals ever held on a single day, highlighted by the women’s triathlon and the marquee women’s 100 meters.
“We want to start day one with a showcase of the fastest females in the world,” said Shana Ferguson, LA28’s chief of sport. The new format will see women run three 100m heats in a single day—a decision made after consultations with athletes.
“It was a largely positive conversation,” said Janet Evans, LA28’s chief athlete officer. “When we presented it as a chance to kick off the Games with one of the marquee events for women, the athletes were excited. They said, ‘Let me know early and I’ll train for it.’”
In a historic shift, track and field events will span the entire duration of the Games, with World Athletics president Sebastian Coe praising the plan as “innovative but respectful of Olympic tradition.”
American sprint star Sha’Carri Richardson said, “Track and field is having its moment, and the road to LA28 is about to be something special, especially for the women’s sprints.”
Athletics and Swimming Swap Weeks
Breaking with tradition, LA28 will flip the athletics and swimming schedules. Athletics will take place in the first week, while swimming will move to the second, allowing SoFi Stadium—the site of the opening ceremony—to host aquatic events later in the Games.
“Having 38,000 fans watch my favorite sport in week two is exciting,” Evans said, noting that the change will also allow swimmers to attend the opening ceremony without worrying about early-morning heats.
‘Super Saturday’ Set for July 29
A blockbuster “Super Saturday” on July 29 will feature 26 medal sessions across 23 sports, including 15 team finals and gold-medal events in athletics, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, cricket, golf, football, swimming, and tennis.
The final swimming champions will be crowned just before the closing ceremony, while the women’s marathon will take place on July 29, followed by the men’s marathon on July 30.
Tickets and New Additions
Around 14 million tickets will be available for LA28 events, with registration opening in January. Organizers confirmed that dynamic pricing will not be used, keeping ticket costs stable.
Weather conditions influenced event timing, with some competitions—like equestrian at Santa Anita—moved to cooler evening hours.
The Games will mark the return of baseball and softball, with baseball held at Dodger Stadium and medal games on July 19. Cricket will make its comeback to the Olympics after more than a century, featuring the women’s final on July 20 and the men’s final on July 29.
Lacrosse will also return, with both finals scheduled for July 29, while flag football and squash will make their Olympic debuts on July 15.
Further details, including venues for the Olympic football tournament across the US and the Los Angeles Paralympics schedule, will be announced later.
