LIVE: US Tariffs on Indian Goods Double to 50% Under Trump Order
A fresh 25% tariff on Indian imports, announced by US President Donald Trump as a penalty for New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil, comes into effect Wednesday, doubling total duties to 50%.
The US Department of Homeland Security confirmed the levy would apply from 12:01 a.m. EDT (9:31 a.m. IST), with limited exemptions for in-transit shipments arriving by September 17.
India has condemned the move as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Monday that his government would not compromise on the interests of farmers and small businesses despite external pressure.
The tariff decision comes amid virtual India-US trade talks and parallel reports of US-Russia discussions on possible energy deals aimed at pushing Moscow toward peace negotiations with Ukraine.
