‘Leave Venezuela Immediately’: US Issues Urgent Travel Warning, Raises Alarm Over Armed Militias

5

The United States government has issued an urgent travel alert advising all American citizens in Venezuela to depart “immediately”, citing a rapidly deteriorating security situation and “fluid” conditions that pose serious risks to travellers and residents.

In a security alert posted by the US Embassy in Venezuela, the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs reiterated that Venezuela remains at the highest travel advisory level — Level 4: Do Not Travel due to “severe risks to Americans,” including **wrongful detention, torture, terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, crime, civil unrest and inadequate health infrastructure.”

Officials also warned that all routine and emergency consular services in Venezuela remain suspended, and the US government is currently unable to provide emergency assistance to its citizens there.

Militias and Road Risks

The alert specifically highlighted reports of armed militia groups — known as “colectivos” — setting up roadblocks and checking vehicles for evidence of US citizenship or support for the United States, urging travellers to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution when travelling by road.

Departure and Safety Guidance

US authorities outlined steps for Americans still in the country or considering travel:

  • Do not travel to Venezuela.

  • Leave the country as soon as possible, especially with international flights resuming.

  • Take precautions and be aware of surroundings.

  • Monitor airlines for updated flight information due to limited availability and high demand.

  • Establish multiple communication channels with friends and family.

  • Prepare contingency plans if choosing to remain, as consular help is unavailable.

  • Enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and follow official updates on social media.

Context

The warning comes amid ongoing instability in Venezuela following recent US military actions that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, sparking protests and unrest in several cities.

The situation remains highly volatile, with repeated alerts to US citizens reflecting continued security threats throughout the country.
