Last Call to Kin, Husband Says ‘Record It,’ Hangs Up: Delhi Cop’s Horrific Murder
A final phone call to her brother, desperate screams, a disconnected line, and a chilling confession by her husband marked the last moments of a 27-year-old Delhi Police woman constable who was allegedly murdered by her spouse last week.
The constable, identified as Kajal, was posted as a commando in the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit of the Special Cell. She died on Tuesday at a private hospital in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, days after being brutally assaulted at her home in Dwarka Mor, southwest Delhi.
Horrific Details
According to senior police officers, Kajal was allegedly attacked by her husband, Ankur Chaudhary (28), who struck her with a metal dumbbell and repeatedly smashed her head against a door frame following a domestic dispute linked to dowry demands.
After the assault, Ankur allegedly called Kajal’s brother, Nikhil, and confessed to killing her, police said.
Nikhil told Hindustan Times that around 10 pm on January 22, Ankur called him during an argument with Kajal. She briefly took the phone to explain the situation, but Ankur snatched it back, asked Nikhil to record the call, and threatened to kill her.
“My sister tried to explain what had happened. He got offended by her remarks, snatched the phone, and said he would kill her. Then I heard her screaming before the call disconnected,” Nikhil said.
About five minutes later, Ankur allegedly called again and claimed he had killed Kajal, asking Nikhil to come and take her body.
When Nikhil reached Delhi around midnight, Ankur’s family had arrived, and Kajal had been taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her brain dead.
Medical Condition and Death
Kajal sustained severe head injuries and was declared brain dead at the hospital near Dwarka on the night of January 22. On January 25, she was shifted to another private hospital in Nehru Nagar, Ghaziabad.
She succumbed to her injuries at around 6 am on Tuesday, January 27, police said.
Who Was Kajal
Originally from Ganaur in Haryana, Kajal joined the Delhi Police in 2022. She later underwent commando training and was posted to the SWAT unit of the Special Cell.
Her brother, Nikhil, also serves in the Delhi Police and is posted at the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Parliament Street.
Kajal and Ankur had a love marriage in November 2023 and have a one-and-a-half-year-old son.
Legal Action
Police registered a case of attempt to murder on the night of the incident and arrested Ankur Chaudhary. He was produced before a Delhi court and remanded to judicial custody.
Following Kajal’s death, the case has now been converted to murder.
“We initially registered a case of attempt to murder and arrested the accused. After the victim’s death, the case has been converted to murder,” said Madhup Tiwari, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order, Zone-2).
