Laos Named Southeast Asia’s Most Affordable Travel Destination for 2025, Daily Budget Starts at ₹1,414
Southeast Asia has long been a favorite for Indian travelers, with Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia topping the charts for international holidays. While these countries are known for being budget-friendly, a recent Time Out report crowns Laos as the region’s most economical destination for 2025.
With an average daily cost of just £12 (about ₹1,414), visitors can comfortably cover accommodation, food, and transport while enjoying an authentic travel experience.
Why Laos Tops the List
-
Hostel beds in Luang Prabang or Vientiane start at £3 (₹353) per night; rooms in Vang Vieng cost as little as £1.50 (₹176).
-
Street food is both delicious and cheap — a plate of sticky rice with grilled pork costs under £1 (₹117).
-
Local buses and minivans connecting major cities are priced below £4.50 (₹529), and daily motorbike rentals average £4.70 (₹553).
-
The new Laos–China Railway offers scenic travel between Vientiane and Vang Vieng for about £6 (₹706).
-
Entry to Kuang Si Falls and the Bear Rescue Centre costs only £2.30 (₹270).
A Calm, Cultural Escape
Unlike its busier neighbors, Laos offers a slower pace of life, lush landscapes of rivers, mountains, and waterfalls, and rich cultural immersion. According to the Vientiane Times, international arrivals rose 11% in the first quarter of 2025, drawing 1.2 million visitors and generating USD 426 million in tourism revenue. Domestic travel has also nearly doubled.
