Kolkata Student Gangrape: Forced Penetration Confirmed, SIT Formed as Probe Intensifies
The gangrape of a 24-year-old first-year law student inside South Calcutta Law College has triggered widespread public outrage and led to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by Kolkata Police as disturbing new details emerge.
The Incident
On June 25, the survivor was allegedly gangraped inside the college premises by a former student and two senior students. The woman, enrolled in the college’s first-year LLB program, said she was lured into a room on campus and assaulted. Her medical examination confirmed forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches—supporting her allegations.
Key Developments
1. Four Arrested So Far:
Among the arrested is Monojit Mishra, the prime accused—a practicing criminal lawyer, former student, and ad-hoc professor at the college. According to police, he assaulted the woman while two others stood guard. A 1.5-minute video of the assault was recovered from his phone.
The others arrested include:
-
Promit Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed, both senior students of the college.
-
Pinaki Banerjee, the college’s security guard, who was seen in CCTV footage and gave “incoherent responses” during interrogation.
2. Special Investigation Team Formed:
Kolkata Police has constituted a five-member SIT, headed by ACP (South Suburban Division) Pradip Ghoshal, to expedite the investigation. The team has already begun recording statements from the survivor and her family.
3. CCTV Footage Corroborates Events:
Surveillance footage from June 25, spanning 3:30 pm to 10:50 pm, reportedly shows the survivor being forcibly taken into the guard room and tracks the movement of the accused. “The footage supports the survivor’s timeline,” a senior officer confirmed.
4. Multiple Crime Scenes Identified:
Forensic teams have collected evidence from three locations on the college premises—the student union room, a washroom, and the guard’s room—all showing signs of a violent struggle.
5. Possible Motive: Rejected Proposal:
Investigators believe the assault may have been triggered by the survivor’s rejection of a marriage proposal by Mishra. She had reportedly told him she was in a relationship and would not “cheat” on her partner. Whether the attack was premeditated remains under investigation.
Public and Political Reactions
The brutal assault has reignited debates around women’s safety, campus security, and political accountability in West Bengal. With damning evidence mounting and arrests made, the focus now shifts to ensuring swift justice for the survivor.
