Kingdom Sequel Shelved: Producer Naga Vamsi Confirms Vijay Deverakonda Starrer Won’t Return
The much-anticipated sequel to Gowtam Tinnanuri’s Vijay Deverakonda-starrer Kingdom has officially been shelved. Producer Naga Vamsi confirmed the development in an interview with Idlebrain, declining to discuss the reasons behind the film’s lukewarm box office performance.
When asked about the sequel, Vamsi said bluntly, “No, we are not making it anymore.” On whether Kingdom could have worked better as a standalone film rather than setting up a sequel, he replied, “There is no point in talking about what happened because it’ll only hurt Gowtam. There’s nothing more to do now.” However, he assured fans that he would collaborate with director Gowtam Tinnanuri again, noting that the filmmaker is currently working on “a different kind of film.”
The Fate of Kingdom
Kingdom hit theatres in July 2025 at a crucial juncture for Vijay Deverakonda, who was seeking a hit after the underwhelming response to his 2022 film Liger. Despite the hype and mixed reviews, the film grossed only ₹82 crore worldwide.
The action-packed thriller starred Vijay as Suri, a constable-turned-reluctant spy who goes undercover in Sri Lanka to infiltrate a criminal gang. Co-stars included Satyadev, Venkitesh, and Bhagyashri Borse. The film ended on a cliffhanger following a deeply emotional twist in Suri’s journey.
What’s Next for Vijay
Prior to Kingdom, Vijay appeared in the 2024 film The Family Star and made a cameo in Kalki 2898 AD. He will next be seen in Rowdy Janardhana, directed by Ravi Kiran Kola, in which he portrays a fierce rowdy. Early glimpses from the film show him covered in blood and wearing a traditional lungi, promising a gritty performance.
