Pop star Katy Perry has faced criticism on social media after her reply to a struggling fan sparked backlash online.

The controversy began when a fan on X shared financial and mental health struggles and said they were considering selling their ticket to one of the singer’s concerts. Many users felt Perry’s response lacked empathy and described it as “tone-deaf.”

Fan opens up about struggles, response sparks backlash

The fan’s post quickly drew attention online. However, instead of offering words of support or comfort, Perry reportedly replied, “But I am looking forward to seeing you!”

The response triggered widespread criticism, with several users arguing that the singer failed to acknowledge the seriousness of the fan’s situation. Some questioned why she did not offer help or make a gesture such as upgrading the fan’s ticket.

One user responded sarcastically, writing, “What a premium motivation that jump-starts the drive to hang on. Very kind of you.” Another commented, “God, you are so out of touch. Someone is clearly going through it and your best response is ‘but I’m looking forward to seeing you!’ Gross. Do better.”

Others suggested that Perry could have handled the situation differently. One user wrote that if she truly cared about the fan, she could have offered a VIP meet-and-greet or encouraged the fan to sell the ticket to help with financial needs. Another post read, “She can’t afford to live at this rate and all you do is say that you look forward to seeing her?”

Katy Perry responds to criticism

Amid the backlash, Perry addressed the negativity by posting a message aimed at her critics on X.

“I love you. Be kind. Always take the high road if you can, my KC’s. It’s much lighter here. So excited to share my joy and light with you this summer. I already miss you,” she wrote on Friday morning (IST).

She also responded to another post about the criticism, suggesting that those attacking her online may themselves be hurting.

“They must already be in a lot of pain to be so unkind. I send them love and hope they can find their peace,” she added.

While Perry did not directly address the specific exchange that sparked the backlash, she continued posting messages of positivity to her followers.
