Actor and newly elected Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Thursday, urging him to expedite the official recognition of Keeladi’s antiquity. This marked Kamal’s first meeting with the Prime Minister since taking oath in the Upper House in July.

Sharing pictures of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), Kamal described it as an “honour” and presented the PM with a memento themed around Keeladi — an ancient Sangam-era site located near Madurai on the banks of the Vaigai River.

“I placed before him a few requests, foremost among them was the call to expedite the recognition of Keeladi’s antiquity,” Kamal wrote, adding that he sought the PM’s support to help the Tamil people showcase to the world the grandeur of Tamil civilisation and the timeless glory of the Tamil language.

The Keeladi excavations have been a point of contention between the Centre and the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government over the interpretation and promotion of the findings.

Kamal, backed by the DMK alliance, entered the Rajya Sabha last month, making his debut in national politics. He took his oath in Tamil, drawing applause from fellow MPs.

On the film front, Kamal was last seen in Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, which released in June in multiple languages.
