Veteran actor Puneet Issar has opened up about one of the most difficult and emotional episodes of his career — the accidental injury of Amitabh Bachchan on the sets of the 1983 film Coolie — and how a deeply moving gesture by Jaya Bachchan left him overwhelmed and tearful.

In a recent interview, Issar recalled the incident that changed the course of his professional life and nearly ended Amitabh Bachchan’s. While filming a dramatic fight sequence in Bangalore, Issar accidentally struck Bachchan in the abdomen in a mistimed move. The injury was so severe that Bachchan underwent multiple surgeries and was declared clinically dead for a brief period, sparking a national outpouring of concern and prayers.

“I Was Treated Like a Villain”

The aftermath was equally painful for Issar, who said he was socially boycotted and professionally sidelined. “For years, I didn’t get work. Producers were scared. The industry treated me like I had committed a crime. But it was a genuine accident,” he said.

Issar added that he lived with the guilt and the public perception for a long time, despite Amitabh Bachchan himself later clarifying that the accident was no one’s fault.

Jaya Bachchan’s Compassionate Response

What stood out for Issar, however, was Jaya Bachchan’s extraordinary grace in the immediate aftermath. “She came up to me, held my hand, and said, ‘Puneet, we know it was not your fault. Don’t blame yourself.’ I had tears in my eyes. In that moment, I saw strength, dignity, and compassion beyond words,” he recalled emotionally.

He said her words gave him a sliver of hope during one of the darkest phases of his life.

A Defining Moment in Bollywood History

The Coolie incident remains one of the most talked-about and emotionally charged moments in Bollywood history. Amitabh Bachchan’s brush with death drew massive public attention — people prayed in temples, hospitals were surrounded by fans, and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi sent personal messages of concern.

The filmmakers later froze the exact frame where the injury occurred in the final cut of Coolie, in tribute to the superstar’s miraculous recovery.

Healing Over Time

Though the incident left a long shadow over Issar’s early career, he gradually found his footing in the industry, notably portraying Duryodhana in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat and later acting and directing in several television and film projects.

In recent years, Issar has spoken openly about the emotional weight he carried and the healing that came with time, clarity, and empathy from the Bachchan family.

Puneet Issar’s emotional retelling of Jaya Bachchan’s graceful gesture is a powerful reminder of humanity amidst tragedy. In an industry often marked by competition and ego, moments like these shine through — not just as stories of forgiveness, but of profound empathy and strength. It’s a testament to the enduring bonds that define the Bollywood community during moments of crisis.
