Jasprit Bumrah Breaks Silence After Multiple Catches Dropped Off His Bowling
Jasprit Bumrah once again underlined his status as the linchpin of India’s bowling attack, claiming a superb five-wicket haul (5/83) to keep the visitors narrowly in front in the first Test against England at Headingley. However, the scorecard alone doesn’t capture the grit and composure he displayed amid repeated fielding lapses.
The Indian pacer endured a frustrating day as three catches were shelled off his bowling—two by Yashasvi Jaiswal and one by the usually dependable Ravindra Jadeja. Yet, Bumrah showed remarkable restraint. Speaking to the BBC, he said, “I am disappointed for a second when catches are dropped. It’s part of the game. The guys are new and working hard. I don’t want to create a scene and put more pressure on them. They’ll learn from this experience.”
He also pointed to the weather conditions at Headingley, noting, “Sometimes the cold makes it difficult to catch. I try not to let it affect me and move forward quickly.”
While Bumrah was India’s lone wicket-taker on Day 2, he received more support on Day 3. Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj took three and two wickets respectively, though their inconsistency allowed England to close in on India’s first-innings total.
England Close the Gap After Indian Batting Collapse
After India posted a formidable 471, England replied strongly with 465, thanks to Ollie Pope’s 106 and Harry Brook’s enterprising 99. Brook was dropped three times and made India pay before falling short of a century while attempting a big hit.
Bumrah, brought back late in the innings to break the growing momentum, struck twice to remove Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue and seal his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests. His late burst underscored the difference in quality and discipline between him and the rest of the Indian seam attack, which allowed England’s tail to add 112 runs—a stark contrast to India’s collapse, where the last five wickets fell for just 18.
India Lead by 96 Runs at Stumps
At the close of Day 3, India reached 90/2 in their second innings, extending their lead to 96. KL Rahul was unbeaten on 47, with Shubman Gill keeping him company. With a strong foundation and Bumrah in form, India will look to press for a decisive lead on Day 4.
