Japan Warns China’s Military Expansion Poses Greatest Strategic Challenge

Japan has issued a strong warning over China’s accelerating military activities, calling Beijing the “greatest strategic challenge” to regional and global stability. In its annual defense white paper submitted to the Cabinet on Tuesday, Japan’s Defense Ministry raised serious concerns over China’s expanded operations, including joint drills with Russia, rising tensions around Taiwan, and growing threats from North Korea.

“The international community is entering a new era of crisis, facing its most severe challenges since the end of World War II,” the 534-page report said, pointing to shifting global power dynamics and intensifying rivalry between the United States and China. The report emphasizes that the Indo-Pacific region, where Japan lies, is at the heart of these security concerns.

Japan specifically warned of China’s growing naval and air presence near its southwestern islands and into the wider Pacific. Chinese naval movements near Japan have tripled in frequency over the past three years, especially in the waters between Taiwan and Japan’s westernmost island of Yonaguni. China’s expanded deployment of aircraft carriers and long-range bomber flights demonstrates Beijing’s aim to project sea power farther into the Pacific, the report said.

In response to the evolving threat landscape, Japan has ramped up its own defense capabilities. Recent years have seen a military build-up on its southwestern islands, with plans to deploy long-range cruise missiles. Last month, Japan conducted a successful test of a short-range, surface-to-ship missile.

The report also highlights a recent series of close aerial encounters, accusing China of flying fighter jets dangerously near Japanese surveillance aircraft — a move Tokyo says risks mid-air collisions. Beijing has pushed back, claiming Japan is conducting intelligence flights near Chinese airspace.

Tensions over Taiwan also loom large. As China continues to assert its claim over the self-governed island, Taiwan recently conducted 10-day live-fire military exercises to prepare for a possible invasion. Japan views a potential Taiwan conflict as a direct threat to its national security.

The report also warned of other regional dangers. North Korea remains an “increasingly serious and imminent threat,” with its development of nuclear-capable missiles, including solid-fuel ICBMs that could reach the U.S. mainland. Meanwhile, Russia’s military activity near Japan, including airspace violations and joint operations with China, continues to raise alarm.

As the U.S. shifts strategic focus, the report notes Japan and other allies are expected to shoulder greater responsibility for maintaining regional peace and security.
