Filmmaker James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to make a massive splash at the global box office, with early projections suggesting earnings of over $350 million. The film follows Cameron’s two previous Avatar installments—Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)—each of which grossed more than $2 billion worldwide, cementing the franchise among cinema’s biggest-ever hits.

Box Office Predictions

According to Variety, Avatar: Fire and Ash could earn between $90 million and $105 million domestically from roughly 3,800 theatres. Internationally, it is expected to bring in another $250 million to $275 million, bringing its global debut estimate to $340 million–$365 million.

For context, the first Avatar debuted at $77 million domestically, while the 3-hour-12-minute sequel opened to $134 million. If the third installment follows a similar trajectory, the Avatar franchise could become the first in history to have three films each surpass $2 billion in global earnings.

Reviews

Critical response to Fire and Ash has been mixed. A review in Hindustan Times commented, “Avatar was an effort to marry simple storytelling with world-class visuals, and give the audience the true joy of cinema. But it seems that Cameron has lost the plot now. In Fire and Ash, it feels as if he created a bunch of visuals and then stitched them together, hoping nobody would notice there was no coherent story, or at least nothing new to bind the plot. It’s still a great cinematic experience, but that is despite the best efforts of the maverick filmmaker. I already dread the next two parts!”

As anticipation builds, Avatar: Fire and Ash is poised to continue the franchise’s record-breaking legacy while taking audiences back to the visually stunning world of Pandora.
