IT Department Dismisses Fake News on ITR Deadline Extension, Says Due Date Remains Sept 15
The Income Tax Department on Sunday refuted claims circulating on social media that the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) has been extended beyond September 15.
In a post on X, the department clarified: “The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025.” It called the messages suggesting an extension to September 30 “fake” and urged taxpayers to rely only on updates from the official Income Tax India handle.
The fake notice being shared online claimed that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had extended the deadline citing “system readiness” and “stakeholder concerns.”
The ITR filing deadline, originally July 31, was previously extended to September 15 after technical glitches and data mismatches were reported on the portal.
Meanwhile, the department said more than 6 crore ITRs for Assessment Year 2025-26 had been filed as of Saturday, thanking taxpayers and professionals for their contribution. It also advised those yet to file to do so before the deadline to avoid penalties.
For assistance, taxpayers can contact the I-T helpdesk, which operates round the clock through calls, live chat, WebEx sessions, and social media support.
