Israel Rejects UK, UN Push for Palestinian Statehood Recognition Amid Renewed Ceasefire Demands

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, on Tuesday criticized growing international support for Palestinian statehood, following a three-day UN conference in New York on a two-state solution and an announcement by UK authorities indicating plans to formally recognize the State of Palestine.

Responding to the developments, Danon said, “Israel has already agreed many times to a ceasefire,” but warned that no “token recognition” or UN resolution would alter the fundamental reality of global divisions between those confronting terrorism and those who “turn a blind eye” or appease extremist forces.

In a statement on X, he reaffirmed Israel’s resolve following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks, stating that Israel would do “whatever is necessary to bring home the hostages and defeat Hamas.”

His remarks came just hours after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared that the UK would formally recognize the State of Palestine during the UN General Assembly in September — unless Israel makes meaningful moves toward peace. Starmer called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and a commitment to a long-term two-state solution. He also demanded Hamas disarm, agree to a ceasefire, and accept no role in governing Gaza.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy echoed Starmer’s position at the UN event co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, stating that Britain would act “with the hand of history on our shoulders” to recognize Palestinian statehood unless Israel ends its Gaza campaign and commits to a sustainable peace.

France has already confirmed its intent to formally recognize Palestine at the General Assembly.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry swiftly rejected the UK’s stance, accusing London of undermining diplomatic efforts and rewarding Hamas. The ministry said such moves could harm negotiations on a ceasefire and the release of hostages, and were driven by “internal political pressures.”

Earlier in the week, Danon criticized the UN conference itself, arguing it only served to “deepen the illusion” rather than promote a real solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel continues to oppose any formal recognition of Palestinian statehood under current conditions.
