Director Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound, starring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, has had a remarkable international journey this year.

The film recently achieved another milestone, being chosen as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars 2026. While the team is ecstatic, Ishaan admits he was over the moon when he received the news—quite literally.

“Jab news aaya, main hawa mein ud raha tha, quite literally. I was on a flight from New York to Mumbai. My connection was lost for a while, and when it came back, it was like a barrage of messages and calls. I couldn’t understand what was happening. For the first time in two years, Neeraj scolded me, saying, ‘saale, tu phone kyun nahi utha raha’. When I landed, I still couldn’t fathom it. Main hawa mein ud raha tha, and I’m slowly coming back down,” he shared.

Ishaan feels proud of the universal connection the film has generated. “It’s been a long time since we’ve seen such a collective sentiment for a film that truly feels deserving,” he says. “Even before the accolades, Cannes, and TIFF recognition, I was already proud because it’s a unique film.”

He explains the film’s resonance: “It touches on empathy and compassion at a time when the world seems increasingly intolerant.” Praising Ghaywan, Ishaan adds, “Neeraj is possibly one of the finest directors we’ve ever had. His social consciousness shines through his films. His politics never overshadow the narrative, which is beautiful. Homebound was made for and about our people, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting its India release.”

The international acclaim has strengthened the team’s confidence. “It’s heartwarming to see a film made with sincerity and passion being recognized globally. The acceptance and love from these platforms reassure us that the story has a universal heart and appeal. Now, the accolades, including the Oscar selection, are just a bonus,” Ishaan says. He adds, “TIFF is arguably the most prestigious North American festival, Cannes is like the Mecca for films, and now with the Academy selection, it feels like we’ve completed the trifecta.”
