‘Investing in Skilling, AI a Force Multiplier’: What Narendra Modi Said on Fears of Job Losses
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed growing anxieties over Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on employment, acknowledging concerns among young people about “AI-driven disruptions” in the job market.
Speaking in an interview with ANI, the Prime Minister sought to reassure citizens that India’s demographic dividend would remain a strength even as AI reshapes industries and work patterns. His remarks come as India hosts one of the world’s largest AI gatherings at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
Modi emphasised that the government is proactively preparing for technological shifts through large-scale investments in skilling and re-skilling initiatives.
“The Government has launched one of the most ambitious skilling initiatives in the world. We’re not approaching this as a future problem but we’re treating it as a present imperative,” he said, adding that “preparation is the best antidote to fear.”
‘AI a Force Multiplier’
Describing AI as a “force multiplier,” Modi said the technology would expand human capabilities rather than simply replace jobs. He noted that AI has the potential to help professionals across sectors — including healthcare, education, and law — serve more people efficiently.
“I view AI as a force multiplier. It will push the boundaries of what we thought possible and enable doctors, teachers, and lawyers to reach out to and help a larger group of people,” he told ANI.
Lessons From History
The Prime Minister framed AI-driven changes within the broader historical context of technological evolution, arguing that innovation typically transforms rather than eliminates employment.
“For centuries, there have been fears that innovation and technological revolutions will eliminate jobs. Yet history teaches us that whenever innovation happens, new opportunities emerge. The same will be true in the age of AI,” he said.
He added that while certain roles may be redefined, new categories of employment — particularly in technology and digital services — are expected to grow as India’s economy continues its digital transformation.
India’s AI Progress
Highlighting India’s performance in global AI metrics, Modi pointed to the country’s position in the Stanford Global AI Vibrancy Index.
“In the Stanford Global AI Vibrancy Index 2025, India ranked third, reflecting strong growth in AI research and development, talent, and the economy,” he said.
Expressing confidence in India’s adaptability, the Prime Minister said AI would strengthen the nation’s workforce by combining innovation with inclusion, positioning the country to benefit from emerging technological opportunities.
