In a historic first, India’s national flag was hoisted atop Seattle’s iconic 605-foot Space Needle to mark the country’s 79th Independence Day.

The ceremony was attended by the Consul General of India in Seattle, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, and city dignitaries, ANI reported. Sharing a video of the flag soaring over the skyline, the Consulate General posted on X: “A historic first in Seattle! India’s tricolour soars over the Seattle skyline. Happy 79th Independence Day of India.”

The Consulate also hosted official celebrations at its premises, featuring the tricolour hoisting, patriotic songs, and traditional dance performances such as Bharatanatyam.

Another American landmark, the One World Trade Centre in New York, was illuminated in the colours of the Indian flag, alongside Grand Central Terminal, Niagara Falls, and the Kosciuszko Bridge. “A vibrant tribute to the deep bonds of friendship between India and the United States,” India in New York wrote on X.

The festivities followed the official Independence Day ceremony in Washington, DC, where Indian Ambassador Vinay Kwatra unfurled the tricolour at India House on August 15.
