India’s First Bullet Train Slashes Mumbai-Surat Travel to 60 Minutes
Construction of India’s first bullet train corridor, the 508-km Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR), is progressing rapidly. The corridor passes through Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
Mumbai–Surat Travel Time
Once operational, the bullet train will cut travel time between Mumbai and Surat to just one hour, reducing current travel by over 100 minutes. Currently, the fastest trains on this route include the 12951 New Delhi Tejas Rajdhani Express (2 hrs 43 mins), the 22961 Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express (2 hrs 53 mins), and the 12009 Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express (2 hrs 58 mins).
Mumbai–Ahmedabad Travel Time
The high-speed rail will also reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to 2 hours 7 minutes, enabling passengers to commute for work and return home the same day, said Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Economic Impact
Vaishnaw highlighted that the corridor will unify the economies of cities along the route — including Mumbai, Thane, Vapi, Surat, Vadodara, Anand, and Ahmedabad — driving significant regional growth.
Stations
The MAHSR will feature 12 stations: Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.
