India celebrated as Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the nation’s first astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS), successfully returned to Earth with a splashdown off the coast of San Diego, California. The event marks a significant milestone in India’s space exploration journey.
The Mission and Return
Shubhanshu Shukla, part of the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission, undocked from the ISS aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft at 4:45 PM IST on July 14, initiating a 22.5-hour return journey. The spacecraft executed a de-orbit burn at 2:07 PM IST, followed by parachute deployment, culminating in a splashdown at approximately 3:01 PM IST. This mission, a collaboration between NASA, ISRO, Axiom Space, and SpaceX, saw Shukla spend 18 days in space, including his time aboard the ISS.
Scientific Contributions
During his stay, Shukla conducted over 60 scientific experiments, including seven ISRO-led studies, such as research on microalgae for food and oxygen production in space. His work is expected to bolster India’s Gaganyaan program, aimed for launch in 2027, and provide insights for future missions.
National Pride and Next Steps
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Shukla’s return, stating he “inspired a billion dreams” with his courage and dedication. Following splashdown, Shukla and the Ax-4 crew—Peggy Whitson, Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski, and Tibor Kapu—were retrieved by recovery teams. Shukla will now undergo a seven-day rehabilitation program to readjust to Earth’s gravity, marking the end of his historic mission.
