Indian among four killed in US shooting linked to family dispute; children found hiding in closet

Four people were shot dead in the United States in what police believe was a domestic dispute, with one of the victims confirmed to be an Indian national, the Consulate General of India in Atlanta said.

The shooting took place in Gwinnett County’s Lawrenceville area, near Atlanta. Authorities identified the suspect as 51-year-old Vijay Kumar. His wife, 43-year-old Meemu Dogra, was among those killed. The other victims were identified as Gourav Kumar (33), Nidhi Chander (37) and Harish Chander (38).

While local authorities have not officially confirmed the nationality of all the victims, their names suggest they were of Indian origin. The Indian consulate said it was extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family but did not specify which victim held Indian citizenship.

Argument preceded the shooting

According to Gwinnett County Police, Vijay Kumar and Meemu Dogra, who lived in Atlanta, travelled with their 12-year-old child to the Lawrenceville home of their relatives on Brook Ivy Court, where Gourav, Nidhi and Harish lived with their two children aged 7 and 9.

Investigators said the couple had an argument at their Atlanta residence before leaving for the relatives’ home. What followed at the Lawrenceville address remains under investigation.

Children hid in closet, son called 911

Police said all three children — aged 12, 9 and 7 — were found hiding in a closet when officers arrived at the scene. The suspect’s 12-year-old son reportedly called 911, prompting the police response that led to the discovery of the four victims.

“At this time, there are no outstanding suspects. The motive appears to be domestic-related, though the investigation is ongoing,” Gwinnett County Police said.

The suspect was located a short distance from the home and taken into custody. Media reports said Vijay Kumar has been charged with multiple counts of murder, aggravated assault and cruelty to children.
