India Welcomes August 15 Trump-Putin Summit in Alaska, Hopes for Ukraine Peace
India on Saturday expressed support for the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, set for August 15 in Alaska, calling it a potential breakthrough for ending the war in Ukraine.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “India welcomes the understanding reached between the United States and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on 15th August 2025. This meeting holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on several occasions, ‘This is not an era of war.’ India, therefore, endorses the upcoming Summit meeting and stands ready to support these efforts.”
The Alaska talks will mark the first US-Russia summit since 2021, when then-President Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva. Trump has indicated that a possible peace deal could involve “swapping some territories” between Ukraine and Russia, describing it as “nothing easy” but potentially beneficial to both sides.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, however, warned against any agreement reached without Kyiv’s participation, calling such arrangements “dead decisions” that would “never work.”
