Amid ongoing tensions between India and the United States over tariffs, trade, and the H-1B visa issue, US Secretary of State met with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Monday. Following the meeting, Rubio emphasized that India remains a “critical” partner for Washington.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. In an official readout, Rubio described ties with New Delhi as being of “critical importance” to the US.

According to the US State Department, the discussion covered multiple facets of India-US bilateral relations, including trade, defense, energy, pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals.

Taking to X, EAM Jaishankar stated that the meeting “covered a range of bilateral and international issues of current concern.” He added, “Our conversation covered a range of bilateral and international issues of current concern. Agreed on the importance of sustained engagement to progress on priority areas. We will remain in touch.”

Thaw in Indo-US Trade Ties

Trade relations between India and the US have been strained in recent months, following a 50 percent tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump on Indian goods, as a penalty for New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil.

The move was part of Washington’s broader effort to pressure Russia and its allies amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

Despite prior tensions and criticisms from White House officials such as Peter Navarro regarding India-Russia ties, Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a breakthrough, agreeing to resume bilateral trade talks.

Following this development, the Indian government confirmed that Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will lead a delegation to the US to accelerate negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement. Goyal, who arrived in the US on Monday, met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in New York.
