India-Pakistan WCL Semi-Final in Limbo Amid Political Tensions and Sponsor Pullout
A potential high-voltage clash between India and Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) semi-finals now hangs in the balance, as political tensions threaten to derail the much-anticipated fixture.
India had earlier opted out of facing Pakistan in the league stage, citing national sentiment following the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed dozens of lives and significantly escalated hostilities between the two countries. With both teams now having qualified for the knockouts, similar concerns are once again surfacing.
EaseMyTrip Withdraws Sponsorship
Adding to the uncertainty, event sponsor EaseMyTrip has announced its decision to distance itself from the India-Pakistan semi-final. In a statement on social media, company co-founder Nishant Pitti said:
“The upcoming semi-final against Pakistan is not just another game. Terror and cricket cannot go hand in hand. @EaseMyTrip, we stand with India. We cannot support any event that attempts to normalise relations with a country that promotes terrorism.”
Pitti made it clear that the move was guided by national sentiment, not business:
“The people of India have spoken and we hear them. Some things are bigger than sport. Nation first, business later. Always.”
Player Resistance
Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan, currently part of the WCL squad, has also signaled his unwillingness to participate in a match against Pakistan. When asked about the potential face-off, he responded firmly:
“You’re asking this question at the wrong time and place — you shouldn’t have asked it. And as I didn’t play earlier, I still won’t play now.”
How the Teams Reached the Semis
India secured the final semi-final spot by finishing fourth in the six-team tournament, after a crucial win over the West Indies Champions. Pakistan Champions, meanwhile, topped the standings with a dominant run in the group stage.
WCL Organisers Yet to Make a Call
The WCL organisers have not yet commented on whether the semi-final will proceed as scheduled or be altered in light of the growing backlash and sponsor withdrawal. With mounting political pressure and uncertainty over player participation, the match’s fate remains unresolved.
As the cricketing world waits for clarity, one thing is evident: this semi-final, if it happens, will carry far greater implications than just a place in the final.
