India-Maldives Mark 60 Years of Diplomatic Ties; Modi Announces Defence, Trade, and Investment Boost
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Maldives, as the two nations celebrated 60 years of diplomatic relations. Speaking alongside Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in Malé, PM Modi described the bilateral relationship as “as old as history and as deep as the ocean.”
Highlighting the symbolic release of a commemorative postal stamp featuring traditional watercraft from both nations, the Prime Minister said it reflected the deep-rooted cultural and historical ties between the two countries. “We are not just neighbours but fellow travellers,” he remarked.
Defence and Strategic Support
Reiterating India’s commitment to regional security, PM Modi assured continued support to the Maldives in enhancing its defence capabilities.
“India will always support the Maldives to strengthen its defence capabilities,” he said, adding that their growing security cooperation demonstrates “mutual trust.”
$565 Million Credit Line, Trade Talks Initiated
PM Modi also announced a new line of credit worth USD 565 million to support the Maldives’ development goals. On the economic front, he revealed that both countries have initiated talks for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and are working towards finalising a Bilateral Investment Treaty to deepen commercial engagement.
Strategic Significance of the Visit
Modi’s two-day visit to the Maldives comes amid a recalibration of bilateral ties following President Muizzu’s election in 2023 on an ‘India Out’ platform. Despite that, PM Modi emphasised, “India is the Maldives’ closest neighbour and most trusted friend. The Maldives holds a key place in our ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Vision MAHASAGAR.”
The visit signals a renewed push for cooperation in defence, development, and economic integration in the Indian Ocean region.
