India Issues Travel Advisory Amid Escalating Cambodia-Thailand Border Clashes
The Indian Embassy in Cambodia has issued a travel advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid border areas amid ongoing violent clashes between Cambodia and Thailand. The advisory comes as tensions flare along the disputed border, with reports of intense fighting and rising casualties.
🔹 What the Advisory Says
“In view of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised to avoid travelling to the border areas,” the embassy said in a public notice.
The advisory further asked Indian travellers to contact the Indian Embassy in Phnom Penh in case of any emergency:
-
Emergency Contact Number: +855 92881676
-
Email: cons.phnompenh@mea.gov.in
🔹 Advisory from Indian Embassy in Thailand
In light of the same conflict, the Indian Embassy in Thailand had earlier issued a parallel warning, urging citizens to monitor updates from Thai authorities, especially if travelling near the Thailand-Cambodia border.
“All Indian travellers to Thailand are advised to check updates from Thai official sources, including TAT Newsroom,” the embassy stated on X (formerly Twitter).
🔺 The Cambodia-Thailand Conflict: What’s Happening?
Fighting erupted along the disputed 800-kilometre border between Cambodia and Thailand late last week, marking the worst violence in over a decade.
-
Fighting began Thursday with the use of jets, tanks, artillery, and ground troops.
-
The death toll has risen to 33, with 13 fatalities reported in Cambodia and 20 in Thailand.
-
Cambodia: 8 civilians and 5 soldiers killed, 71 wounded
-
Thailand: 14 civilians and 6 soldiers killed
-
This surpasses the death toll from the 2008–2011 border clashes, which left 28 dead and displaced tens of thousands.
🔹 Background of the Dispute
The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long-standing border dispute dating back to colonial-era demarcations. A UN court ruling in 2013 had temporarily eased tensions, but the conflict flared up again in May 2025 when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a skirmish.
Multiple areas along the border remain contested, with nationalist sentiments and military buildups on both sides adding to the volatility.
⚠️ For Indian Travellers: What You Should Do
-
Avoid travel to border regions between Thailand and Cambodia
-
Stay updated with local news and advisories from Indian missions
-
Reach out to Indian embassies in Phnom Penh or Bangkok in case of emergencies
The Indian government is closely monitoring the situation as the border dispute threatens regional stability and the safety of Indian nationals in both countries.
