Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Tarique Rahman following the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s strong performance in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections.
In a message posted on X, Modi said, “I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership.”
He added that India remains committed to supporting a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh, expressing optimism about deepening bilateral ties and advancing shared development goals.
Rahman’s BNP secured a clear lead as Bangladesh held its first national elections since the 2024 student-led uprising that brought an end to the government of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
As vote counting progressed, BNP and its allies had won 177 seats, with results declared in 237 constituencies. Counting continued in the remaining seats. The Jamaat-e-Islami and its partners were reported to have secured 53 constituencies, according to the latest available figures.
