India Alerts Consumers Over Pakistan-Made Fairness Creams, Citing Serious Health Risks

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has issued a public health alert against the sale and use of two unauthorised cosmetic products allegedly manufactured in Pakistan.

The products flagged by the drug regulator are ‘Chandni Whitening Cream’ and ‘Goree Beauty Cream’. According to the CDSCO, the creams contain excessive levels of heavy metals beyond the specified permissible limits.

‘Excessive Heavy Metals, Toxic Effects’

Warning consumers about the products, the CDSCO said their use could have toxic effects and pose a serious health risk.

The regulator said cosmetic products intended for consumer use must be safe for the public and that their manufacture and import are regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the Cosmetics Rules, 2020.

The CDSCO also noted that standards for cosmetic products are prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Cosmetics manufactured for sale and distribution require a licence from the State Licensing Authority, while imported cosmetics must be registered with the Central Licensing Authority in accordance with applicable rules.

CDSCO Advises Consumers Not To Use Products

In its alert, the CDSCO specifically named Goree Beauty Cream Made in Pakistan and Chandni Whitening Cream Made in Pakistan, advising consumers not to purchase or use them.

The regulator also cautioned consumers against using similarly named cosmetic products if they have already been purchased.

The CDSCO advised the public to buy and use only authorised cosmetic products carrying essential details, including the manufacturing licence number, manufacturer’s details, batch number, date of manufacture and expiry date. Imported cosmetics should also carry the relevant registration number.
