Imran Khan, Wife Bushra Bibi Sentenced to 17 Years Each in Toshakhana 2 Case
A Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years’ imprisonment each in the Toshakhana 2 corruption case, news agency PTI reported.
The verdict was delivered by special court judge Shahrukh Arjumand inside the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. The case relates to alleged fraud involving state gifts received by the former first couple from the Saudi government in 2021.
According to Dawn, the prosecution accused Khan of purchasing an expensive Bulgari jewellery set—gifted by the Saudi crown prince during an official visit in May 2021—at a heavily undervalued price. The jewellery, estimated to be worth around ₹80 million, was allegedly retained after paying only Rs2.9 million.
The court awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Pakistan Penal Code and an additional seven years under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. A fine of ₹10 million was also imposed on each of them.
The court order noted that a “lenient view” was taken while sentencing, considering Imran Khan’s age and Bushra Bibi being a woman.
Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), rejected the verdict, calling it a “kangaroo court” decision and alleging that Khan’s family was barred from entering the jail during the proceedings. PTI said a closed-door jail trial was “neither free nor fair” and likened it to a military trial.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar welcomed the judgment, calling the actions of Khan and his wife a “breach of public trust”. He said the 17-year sentence would run consecutively and begin after Khan completes his sentence in the £190 million corruption case.
