IMD Warns of Developing Weather System in Bay of Bengal; Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Andaman & Nicobar Islands
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a weather advisory stating that a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal around November 22. The system is expected to intensify into a depression over the central parts of the south Bay of Bengal by November 24.
If the system strengthens into a cyclonic storm, it will be named ‘Senyar’—a term meaning “lion,” proposed by the United Arab Emirates under the North Indian Ocean cyclone naming list.
Heavy Rainfall Alert for Andaman & Nicobar Islands
The IMD has predicted:
-
Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7–20 cm) at isolated places over Nicobar Island
-
Heavy rainfall (7–11 cm) over Andaman Island
Additionally, thunderstorms with gusty winds (40–50 kmph) and lightning are very likely on November 24 and 25, according to officials quoted by PTI.
Squally Weather Expected Over Andaman Sea
The developing system is also likely to bring:
-
Surface wind speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph
-
Rough sea conditions across the Andaman Sea
Because of this, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the Andaman Sea until November 23.
Advisories Issued for Locals and Tourists
A Local Cautionary Signal–3 has been raised at Port Blair Port, warning of worsening sea conditions. Authorities have urged:
-
Boat operators and fishermen to exercise extreme caution
-
Tourists and residents to avoid risky sea activities and strictly follow safety guidelines issued by the administration
The IMD continues to monitor the system closely and is expected to update warnings as the weather pattern evolves.
