IMD Issues Red Alert for Mumbai as Heavy Rains Continue to Lash City
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert for Mumbai for the second time in three days, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of the city and neighbouring districts.
The highest-level alert covers Borivali, Thane, Kalyan, Mulund, Powai, Santacruz, Chembur, Worli, Navi Mumbai and Colaba, where waterlogging has already triggered severe traffic congestion.
What to expect
According to IMD, rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour, along with thunderstorms, overcast skies and gusty winds, is likely through the day. Mumbai is forecast to receive heavy to very heavy showers until at least August 23. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 26.5°C, with a minimum of 24°C.
Statewide alerts
Beyond Mumbai, red alerts have been issued for Ratnagiri, Alibag, Raigad Reserve, Shrivardhan, Harnai and Dapoli.

Orange alerts are in place for parts of Sindhudurg, Aurangabad, Jalgaon, Nanded and other regions.

Yellow alerts cover Nashik, Pune, Kolhapur, Solapur, Beed and several other districts.
Marathwada has been placed under an orange alert today, shifting to yellow tomorrow, while Madhya Maharashtra remains under red alert until August 19. Konkan, Goa, Vidarbha, Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch are also bracing for very heavy rainfall in the coming days.
Impact in Mumbai
On Saturday, the city recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall in parts, leading to waterlogging, disrupted local train services and a landslide in Vikhroli that killed two people and injured two others. Air services were also affected, with multiple diversions and delays reported.
Travel advisories
With rain disrupting airport routes, airlines including IndiGo and Akasa Air have urged passengers to check flight status before travelling and allow extra time to reach the airport.
