IAF Pilot Killed in Tejas Crash at Dubai Air Show Identified as Wing Commander Namansh Syal
The Indian Air Force officer who died after a Tejas LCA Mk-1 fighter jet crashed during a demonstration at the Dubai Air Show on Friday has been identified as Wing Commander Namansh Syal.
The crash occurred around 3:40 pm during an aerial display. Initial uncertainty over whether the pilot managed to eject was later clarified by the IAF, which confirmed his death.
“An IAF Tejas aircraft met with an accident during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show today. The pilot sustained fatal injuries. IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family,” the Air Force said in a statement, adding that a court of inquiry will investigate the cause of the crash.
Himachal Mourns the Loss
Wing Commander Syal hailed from Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu shared his photograph and paid tribute on X, writing: “The nation has lost a brave, dutiful and courageous pilot… I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family.”
Former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur also called the incident “extremely heartbreaking and painful.”
This is the second crash involving an LCA Tejas fighter. In March 2024, another Tejas aircraft went down near Jaisalmer during a training sortie, though the pilot ejected safely.
What Happened at the Air Show
The Dubai Air Show, featuring participants from more than 150 countries, began on November 17 and was scheduled to conclude on Friday. An IAF contingent—including the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team and Tejas fighters—arrived at Al Maktoum Airbase last week.
Footage from the final day shows the Tejas aircraft suddenly nosediving before crashing, triggering large plumes of smoke and fire at Al Maktoum International Airport. Investigators are working to determine the cause.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan expressed condolences, praising the pilot’s courage and reaffirming support for his family.
