How Zoe Saldaña overtook Scarlett Johansson to build a $16 billion box office empire

Hollywood’s box office hierarchy has been reshaped this week. As of January 14, 2026, Zoe Saldaña has become the highest-grossing female actor of all time, overtaking her longtime Marvel co-star Scarlett Johansson.

The milestone was driven by the runaway success of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which crossed $1.23 billion globally on Tuesday. With that, Saldaña’s cumulative career box office haul has climbed to nearly $16 billion, according to industry tracker The Numbers, placing her at the very top of the all-time rankings.

The achievement has sparked a fresh debate among fans: does box office dominance also make Saldaña the richest woman in movies?

Box office dominance vs personal wealth

Saldaña’s career earnings reflect extraordinary franchise power rather than billionaire wealth. Prior to the latest Avatar installment, her films had already grossed more than $14 billion worldwide, ranking her behind Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson. The latest sequel vaulted her past both.

However, box office totals do not directly translate into personal fortune. Despite anchoring some of the biggest films ever made, Saldaña’s estimated net worth stands at around $60 million — a figure expected to rise as she increasingly takes on producer roles.

By contrast, the title of richest female actor is widely attributed to Jami Gertz, whose estimated $8–12 billion fortune stems largely from her family’s ownership stake in the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. Other stars, including Selena Gomez and Rihanna, have achieved billionaire status through business ventures in beauty and fashion rather than acting salaries.

A historic franchise run

Saldaña’s unprecedented box office record is built on a rare combination of franchise success. She is the only actor to appear in four films that have each grossed more than $2 billion worldwide: Avatar (2009), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

Her roles across three of the most lucrative franchises in cinema history — Avatar, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Star Trek — have made her one of the most recognisable figures of the modern blockbuster era.

On Tuesday evening, Saldaña acknowledged the milestone in a video message shared on social media.

“I just want to express my sincerest gratitude for the extraordinary journey that has led me to become the highest-grossing film actor of all time today,” she said. “This achievement is entirely because of the franchises and collaborators I’ve been so fortunate to work with, and every director who placed their trust in me.”

Early life

Zoe Yadira Saldaña Nazario was born on June 19, 1978, in New Jersey. Of Dominican and Puerto Rican heritage, she was raised in New York City’s Jackson Heights neighbourhood alongside her two sisters, before beginning a career that would eventually place her at the summit of global box office history.
