Honeymoon Turns to Tragedy: Murder of Raja Raghuvanshi Uncovered in Multi-State Investigation
What began as a romantic honeymoon quickly escalated into a chilling murder mystery spanning three states. Raja Raghuvanshi, a resident of Indore, was allegedly murdered by his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, and her former lover, Raj Kushwaha, just days after their wedding. Police across Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh worked tirelessly to unravel the twisted plot and apprehend those responsible.
The Disappearance in Meghalaya
Raja and Sonam married on May 11 and set off for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20. However, the couple was reported missing on May 23 after they were last seen at a homestay in Shillong. CCTV footage revealed the couple wearing black jackets and carrying a white suitcase, but their whereabouts soon became unknown.
On June 2, Raja’s body was discovered in a deep gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls in Sohra. A smartwatch and a tattoo bearing the name “Raja” on his arm confirmed his identity. Further investigation at the scene uncovered a blood-stained machete, a broken smartphone screen, Sonam’s white shirt, and medication, all of which pointed to foul play.
Sonam’s Mysterious Disappearance
Sonam, 25, had been missing since the couple’s disappearance. Police tracked her down more than 1,200 kilometers away in Nandganj, Uttar Pradesh, where she was found crying at a roadside restaurant at 1 a.m. on Monday. She was taken to a women’s distress center and later hospitalized. A police team from Meghalaya is expected to bring her back for questioning.
The Sinister Plot Behind the Murder
Investigations revealed a shocking conspiracy orchestrated by Sonam’s former lover, Raj Kushwaha, who is believed to be the mastermind. Kushwaha, an employee at a tile distribution company owned by Sonam’s brother, allegedly hired three men—Vishal Chauhan, Anand Kumar, and Akash Rajput—to carry out the murder.
The suspects were reportedly in the area on May 23, the day the couple went missing. Local guide Albert Pde recalled seeing the couple trekking with three unidentified men near Mawlakhiat. Raja was walking with the men, while Sonam followed behind.
Kushwaha and Chauhan were arrested in Indore, while Anand Kumar was apprehended in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh.
Sonam’s Involvement and Role in the Murder
Investigators uncovered phone records showing frequent communication between Sonam and Kushwaha both before and during the trip. Police believe Sonam shared the couple’s live location with the assailants. The machete found near the crime scene was not a local tool, suggesting it was brought specifically for the murder. The weapon has been sent for forensic analysis to determine its origins.
Raja’s mother reported receiving a voice message from Sonam on May 23, in which Sonam claimed she was trekking and refused to break her fast. This was the last communication anyone had from Sonam until her recovery in Uttar Pradesh.
Family Calls for Justice
Raja’s brother, Vipul Raghuvanshi, has publicly accused Sonam and her family of being complicit in the murder, demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case. “This was a premeditated murder. We need justice,” Vipul said.
The investigation continues as police work to piece together the full extent of the conspiracy that led to Raja Raghuvanshi’s tragic death.
