Hema Malini Mourns Sholay Co-Star Asrani, Calls Him ‘A Gem of an Actor’
Veteran actor Asrani, best known for his iconic role as the jailer in Sholay, passed away on Monday at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness. His Sholay co-star Hema Malini paid an emotional tribute on Tuesday, sharing a throwback picture with him on X (formerly Twitter).
“We have lost one more gem of an actor. Asrani ji, who has regaled audiences with his superb comedy, is no more,” Hema wrote. “He has done many memorable roles in movies with me, but his role as the jailor in Sholay was simply mind-blowing!”
She added, “The film industry, already in shock with the passing of Pankaj Dheer, now has to contend with one more severe loss. Heartfelt condolences to his family who have to bear this heavy loss.”
According to Asrani’s manager Babu Bhai Thiba, the veteran actor passed away at 3 PM on Monday at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai. He is survived by his wife Manju Asrani, sister, and nephew.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Asrani appeared in over 350 films, becoming one of Hindi cinema’s most beloved comic actors. His impeccable timing and expressive performances made him a staple in classics and modern films alike.
Beyond Sholay (1975), his memorable roles include performances in Chhoti Si Baat, Amar Akbar Anthony, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Dhamaal, All The Best, R… Rajkumar, and Bunty Aur Babli 2.
Asrani leaves behind a legacy defined by laughter, warmth, and timeless performances that continue to resonate across generations.
