Heavy Rain to Continue in Delhi-NCR; Yamuna Overflows, Schools Shut Across Region

Delhi and the national capital region (NCR) are set to receive more rainfall on Thursday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued orange and yellow alerts for parts of the region. Gurugram is under an orange alert for moderate rain, while Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad have yellow alerts for light rain and thunderstorms.

Continuous rainfall over the past few days has pushed the Yamuna River past the 207-metre mark for the fifth time since 1963. Overflowing water entered Nigambodh Ghat, the capital’s oldest cremation ground, forcing a temporary halt in operations. IMD forecasts thunderstorms in Delhi with temperatures ranging between 24°C and 33°C.

The rain has disrupted daily life across the NCR. Schools in Noida and Ghaziabad remained closed on Wednesday, and waterlogging has been reported in several areas. SpiceJet issued an advisory warning passengers of potential flight delays at Delhi airport.

The downpour has also triggered severe flooding in neighboring states. Punjab reported 37 deaths and has released ₹71 crore for relief operations, while rivers in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, and Kashmir are flowing in spate, prompting evacuations, road closures, and school shutdowns. In Sundernagar, Mandi, the landslide death toll rose to seven, and authorities deployed helicopters to rescue stranded pilgrims.
