Heavy Rain Alerts Across North India: Schools, Offices Shut as Monsoon Wreaks Havoc
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall warnings across North India as the monsoon continues to batter the region. Delhi-NCR, including Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad, is under a heavy rainfall alert, while Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand face red alerts for extremely heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides. Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir remain on an orange watch.
Authorities have ordered schools, colleges, and offices to remain closed and encourage work-from-home arrangements. In Chandigarh and Jammu & Kashmir, educational institutions are closed, with online classes suggested where possible.
In Gurugram, heavy rainfall caused waterlogging and traffic congestion, including a seven-kilometre traffic jam. The District Disaster Management Authority issued an orange alert for the city. Gurgaon recorded over 100 mm of rain in just four hours on Monday afternoon, prompting further warnings.
Delhi is facing a flood alert as the Yamuna River crosses the danger mark. Evacuations are underway near affected areas. In Jammu, schools remain closed due to persistent rains and landslide risks in hilly regions.
In Punjab, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria will visit flood-affected districts from September 2–4, covering Ferozepur and Tarn Taran on September 2, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot on September 3, and Hoshiarpur and Sri Anandpur Sahib on September 4.
