Delhi remained in the grip of a punishing heatwave on Wednesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the capital. Temperatures ranged between 40.9°C and 45.0°C across various parts of the city, while the heat index — which factors in humidity — climbed to a searing 51.9°C.

Relief on the Horizon for Northwest India

However, some respite is in sight. The IMD’s latest forecast suggests that northwest India, including Delhi, is likely to witness a gradual decline in temperatures from June 14, due to an approaching western disturbance.

“The severe heat is expected to persist till Thursday. A western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from the night of June 13, which may bring light rain and thunderstorms in Delhi,” said Naresh Kumar, senior IMD scientist, as quoted by PTI.

Hottest Areas in Delhi

As per IMD data recorded at 5:30 p.m.:

  • Ayanagar was the hottest at 45.0°C

  • Palam recorded 44.5°C

  • Ridge: 43.6°C

  • Pitampura: 43.5°C

  • Lodi Road: 43.4°C

  • Safdarjung: 43.3°C

  • Mayur Vihar: 40.9°C

Adding to the strain, Delhi also recorded its highest peak power demand of the season at 8,231 MW around 10:55 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC).

Red Alert in Punjab

Punjab continues to endure intense heat, with dry conditions and temperatures significantly above normal. The IMD has issued a red alert for June 12 and 13, warning residents of the risk of heat-related illnesses.

“Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are likely to continue over northwest India, including the western Himalayan region, till June 13 and reduce thereafter,” the IMD bulletin stated.

South India: Rain Brings Relief

While northern India battles extreme heat, southern states are set to experience significant rainfall over the coming days.

The IMD has issued a heavy rainfall alert for 10 districts in Telangana on June 12:
