Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became the first Indian leader in 30 years to visit Ghana, marking a significant milestone in India’s engagement with West Africa. He received a warm and vibrant welcome upon his arrival in Accra for a landmark two-day visit.

Modi was greeted at Kotoka International Airport with a ceremonial guard of honour and a traditional reception. A touching moment unfolded when a group of Ghanaian children welcomed him with the devotional chant “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”, reflecting the cultural bond shared between the two nations. Later at his hotel, a short musical performance was held in his honour, which the Prime Minister watched appreciatively.

This is Modi’s first bilateral visit to Ghana, a key partner for India in the Global South and an influential member of the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Ahead of his departure, Modi said he hoped the visit would deepen the historical relationship between India and Ghana. “I look forward to exploring new areas of cooperation in investment, energy, health, security, and development partnership,” he said, noting that addressing Ghana’s Parliament would be a “great honour” as both nations are thriving democracies.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi will hold talks with President John Dramani Mahama to further enhance bilateral ties, with particular focus on economic collaboration, defence cooperation, and energy partnerships.

Following his Ghana visit, the Prime Minister will continue his multi-nation tour with stops in Trinidad and Tobago (July 3–4), Argentina (July 4–5), Brazil—where he will attend the 17th BRICS Summit—and Namibia, as part of a broader push to strengthen India’s global footprint.
