A 28-year-old woman doctor from a government hospital in Maharashtra’s Satara district was found dead, allegedly by suicide, in a hotel room late Thursday night. In a shocking revelation, police said they discovered a note written on her palm accusing two police officers of rape and mental harassment over the past five months.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed immediate suspension of the officers named in the note and assured a thorough investigation.

“We have registered a case, and the body has been sent for post-mortem. We are also probing the allegations mentioned in the suicide note on the victim’s hand,” Satara Police told news agency PTI.

Allegations of rape and harassment
According to police, the doctor accused sub-inspector Gopal Badane of repeatedly raping and sexually harassing her. Another officer, Prashant Bankar, was accused of subjecting her to mental harassment.

Maharashtra State Women’s Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar said the commission has taken cognisance of the case and directed the Satara Police to take “strict action” against the accused.

Claims of pressure to falsify post-mortem reports
Family members alleged that the victim had been under pressure from police and political figures to alter post-mortem reports at the hospital. “There was a lot of police and political pressure on her to make wrong mortem reports. She tried to complain about it. My sister should get justice,” her cousin told ANI.

Her aunts also confirmed that she had confided in them about the pressure she faced at work. “She was bright and ambitious… She was under immense stress at the hospital, and that is why she took this extreme step,” one aunt said.

Accused officers suspended, probe underway
Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi said a case has been filed against Badane and Bankar under charges of rape and abetment to suicide. Both officers have been suspended, and teams are searching for them.

“A thorough probe and stringent action will be taken,” Doshi said.

Chief Minister Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio, personally spoke to the Satara SP and ordered immediate suspension of the accused officers.
