United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep alarm and frustration over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling the situation “appalling” as civilians endure mass displacement, blocked aid routes, and increasing desperation amid ongoing conflict.
In a strongly worded statement released Monday, Guterres emphasized the urgent need for unrestricted humanitarian access, denouncing the continuous obstruction of aid delivery and the intensifying toll on civilians. “I am appalled by the deepening aid crisis in Gaza,” Guterres said, underscoring that more than 1.7 million people — nearly 80% of the population — are now internally displaced.
Blockades and Desperation
The Secretary-General noted that Israeli restrictions on aid convoys, particularly to northern Gaza, have made it virtually impossible to distribute life-saving assistance, including food, water, and medical supplies. Humanitarian agencies report that convoys are regularly delayed, denied entry, or subjected to extensive security checks, resulting in spoiled goods and growing starvation risks.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Gaza is on the brink of famine, with severe acute malnutrition rising among children and thousands of families lacking basic shelter and hygiene facilities.
A Call for Ceasefire and Protection of Civilians
Guterres reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire and compliance with international humanitarian law, urging all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians. “This war is taking a devastating toll on Gaza’s people. Their suffering must end,” he stated.
He also called on Israel to lift restrictions on aid delivery and to reopen critical border crossings, including the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings, which remain either shut or operating at limited capacity due to hostilities and security constraints.
International Appeals and Dwindling Resources
The UN and its partners continue to appeal for greater international support, but face logistical and funding challenges. Many aid agencies have warned of a collapse in humanitarian operations unless corridors are secured and funding gaps are urgently addressed.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to broker a truce have stalled amid deep mistrust between the warring parties, even as global leaders press for renewed talks.
As the crisis deepens, Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to staying engaged and supporting Gaza’s civilians, while calling on the international community to act decisively. “Humanity must prevail,” he concluded.
